Captioning Services for Live Performance
Arts & Disability Ireland is the sole provider of Captioning Services for Live Performance in the Republic of Ireland. Captioning is similar to television subtitling and gives deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to live performance. The actors’ words appear on a display unit (or units) on or near the stage at the same time as they are spoken or sung. Speaker names, sound effects and offstage noises are also shown.
Captioned performances are particularly helpful for D/deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people who want to access plays in english, but is also helpful to
- People whose hearing is not as sharp as it used to be
- Anyone who has difficulty following strong accents
- Students who are studying the text of a play
- People whose first language is not English
At present Arts & Disability Ireland provides Captioning Services for Live Performance at the Abbey Theatre and Axis in Ballymun, and hopes to continue to roll out the service nationally over the coming years.
Visit our What's On guide for details of all forthcoming Captioned performances.
