Join us at the Mill Street Studios on Tuesday 10th August between 6pm and 8pm for the launch of Reflections and Representations, a 2-person exhibition which includes works by artists Anna Berndston and Amanda Elena Conrad.

About the artists:

Anna Berndtson

Performance is the foundation of Berndtson’s practice, particularly in the form of long duration performance installations. Her practice also incorporates video and photography where the artist places herself in the centre of the work. The substance of the work for this exhibition is held in the body of the artist and in the images of iconic female figures. Berndtson’s sometimes, sarcastic relationship towards the female and herself also reflects the seriousness in her work.

Berndtson was born in Malmö, Sweden in 1972. She moved to the UK in 1992 where she studied Theatre Performance at Dartington College of Arts. After graduating in 1999 she moved to Berlin and in 2001 joined the performance class of Marina Abromovic at the HBK Braunschweig, Germany. In 2003 she co founded the performance duo TBL (www.tallblondladies.com ) with Irina Runge. She has performed and exhibited work extensively including Rencontres Internationales, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin ( 2010), The 10th Open International Performance Art Festival, Bejing, China (2009) Artists Space , New York (2007) PS1 MoMA, New York (2006) Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, (2005) and Venice Biennale ( Recycling the Future –VV2 Performance event (2003).

The artist was awarded the Fire Station Artists’ Studios /Arts and Disability Ireland Studio Award 2010 and she is currently taking part in a mentoring programme with the artist Amanda Elena Conrad in association with this award.

Amanda Elena Conrad

The central point of Conrad’s video and installation practice is the human; as a contrasting force to its surroundings, changing and being changed. The urban; a reflection of the human, often functions as the habitat of the work. The work developed for this exhibition reflects and relives the sounds, movement and pace of the urban. Well-known scenarios are revisited and the city becomes yet again physical and alive as one is stepping into the rhythm of it.

Amanda Elena Conrad was born in 1981 in Kiel, Germany. She studied Fine Art Sculpture at the Alanus University of Art and Social Science in Bonn, Germany and graduated in 2008 with a BA(hons) in Fine Art Sculpture from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. She has exhibited in Ireland and Germany including Mill Street Studios solo show Watching with eyes closed, Listening while talking (2010), The Joinery group show Chronicles of a dying cloud (2008) and Monster Truck Works to shrink the nation (2006) with Ian Clotworthy. Amanda Elena is currently taking part in a mentoring programme with the artist Anna Berndtson.
