Christy has returned home from England for the summer. His first visit is to his neighbours the de Burca family. Old Mrs de Burca and her three daughters each have their own unique relationship with Christy.

Meanwhile in Bunty’s bar Christy’s fellow emigrants Peter and Goldfish swallow pints and share stories of their lives abroad. For them, this is precisely the drink-fuelled homecoming they have saved up for. For Christy, the stakes are higher this time.

Tom Murphy returns to the topic of the emigrant in this tragic tale of the search for home. Set in 1950s Ireland, this play which was commissioned and first staged by the Abbey in 2000, takes on a new resonance in Ireland of today.
